ABSTRACT

Hong Kong is hugely dependent, and therefore hugely vulnerable, when it comes to food imports. Hong Kong known as the “freest market in the world” follows the neo-liberal ideology. It’s all about the market. It’s all about privatisation. It’s all about the corporations. One immediate consequence is that the food system is designed for profit, and not for feeding people.

I believe this topic and research is a necessary step in ensuring a stable future for Hong Kong and more specifically Lamma Island. It starts a discussion about reducing its food security risk and vulnerability, as global food prices are unpredictable. This project will focus on the food sovereignty for the residents of Hong Kong's second largest island, Lamma, by designing a system of management and negotiation to achieve a ten percent level of food soverignty.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS

What are the realities for food sovereignty for Lamma Island within the notion of deglobalization and commoning, and how could this understanding inform ways of reproducing or reestablishing new networks and systems?
